Kane
I'm thinking it is a brachiopod, but the moss is getting in the way of the striations. You might consider scrubbing off (what appears to be) the moss. But, I would say you have a bona fide brach! Congrats. ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
Daniel Frew
What do you recommend scrubbing it with? Dan
Kane
That I couldn't tell you with much confidence without knowing if it is moss. Does it feel "furry"? I would venture to apply some steel wool on a very small area to see if anything comes up, but just as a test. ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
Archimedes
looks like a silicified Productid brachiopod, maybe an Inflatia (genus)
JohnBrewer
Looks like a brachiopod to me too. Start with low aggression first, maybe a thumb under a tap of running water, then a toothbrush or similar and then on upwards show us the final result! Kane
I'm going to second JohnBrewer's suggestion. Don't go as far as steel wool yet! ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
caldigger
Looks more like a calcium iron stained crust to me and not moss. Scrubbing it too much may desecrate the item, just be careful.
Archimedes
this specimen will not clean up any better than it is, this is a silicified fossils
Daniel Frew
You are correct Archimedes. I tried with my finger then a tooth brush and it didn't do anything. Thanks everyone. Dan
