sixgill pete
I spent the day yesterday with a group at a southeastern North Carolina quarry hunting Eocene Castle Hayne Formation and Cretaceous PeeDee Formation. While there were many of the common Eocene and Cretaceous echinoids found. There were not a lot of teeth. However I did manage to snag a rather nice Carcharocles auriculatus tooth. a.k.a. "ric". The tooth, with a feeding damage broken tip measured out at 3 5/8 inch. I believe if the tip was there this tooth would have hit the magic 4 inch mark. I also found a very interesting vert in the Cretaceous PeeDee that I will be posting in the ID section. Ground shots .... In hand .... after cleaning ... back ... front 2 Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt behind the trailer, my desert Them red clay piles are heaven on earth I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt Patterson Hood; Drive-By Truckers May 2016 May 2012 Aug 2013, May 2016, Apr 2020 Oct 2022

Shamalama
That is very nice and the cusps are so detailed! Is the crack on the front from feeding or quarry equipment? -Dave __________________________________________________ Geologists on the whole are inconsistent drivers. sixgill pete
Thanks everyone. Dave , the cusps on this tooth are as you said, extremely detailed. That is one of the best features of this tooth, along with the color on the labial side. The cracks and enamel damage on the lingual side ( actually the back of the tooth ) are not from any equipment. I think they are just from this tooth being exposed to the weather before I found it. FossilDAWG
Gorgeous tooth! Does this quarry require the mine safety training? Have you guys figured out how to get that training? I'm planning on joining the NC Paleo Society for this coming year, but there might not be any point if I have to figure out how to get certified before being able to go on any field trips.
