Guest Nicholas
Okay you guys are the masters and I need an opinion. I have a brachiopod, I don't know anything about it other than it is fossilized. It has very very detailed groves and patterns on it but it also had a build up of some sort of mineral, and dirt. I went at it with a tooth brush and managed to knock off a lot of the heavier loose stuff and then I soaked it in water for approx 1 hour to attempt to loosen the other materials stuck on it. It seems to work a bit, so I began working with tooth picks. Now the edges of what is essentially the opening of the brachiopod is beginning to flake. Seeing how I have 90% of the garbage off it should I call it a day, or is there anyway to strengthen the brach itself. I know this is really my call but say the fossil was your own what would you do? Xiphactinus
one thing you can do easily (and easily reversed) is simply coat the edge of the shell with diluted Elmer's glue. It will harden the shell, and if you want to take it off later, just soak in water.
