Found this in NW North Dakota it has many sides and features. It is unusual and am curious to its explanation.

This looks like a limestone or dolostone or chert nodule, with some other concretions on/in it. (Pic 1)

Geologic in origin, methinks. ;)

Yes sorry didn't mean to disappoint  maybe someone else can explain it better some parts look like sap I thought it was cool I thought something was fossilized within it. There are a few more photos if anyone has interested in having a look let me know.

@Nörsk Grunner Have you tried splitting it?

No how do you split rocks, seriously what is your method?

Depends on the rock and its hardness. By the looks of this one, I wold use a 4lb sledge. You could go slower and more precise with a standard geologic hammer, but it would mean more strikes to split it.

(and probably obvious and doesn't need to be stated, but safety glasses to protect the eyes are a must before you start swinging!)

I'm not sure what kind of stone that is, but it looks to me that it's broken out of a larger complex. What you call "sap" appears to be a layer of some kind of mineral, partially crystallized, maybe calcite or quartz. This stone has a number of "veins", as Kane puts it, running through it. If you split the stone along those lines, you would probably discover similar features like your "sap". These were originally tectonic cracks in the stone into which mineral rich hot water seeped and then later deposited its minerals there.

That's a pretty nice Septarian nodule.
