Malcolmt
My german one uses a carbide stylus and carbide is brittle . You accidentally bang the side of the stylus against something hard and it can shatter. Done that two times and at $50 a stylus that hurts. Also mine are so short that you really can only sharpen them once. Problem with German engineering is that it is so precise and really has low tolerances for anything being off spec. Super precise though and it is barely moving the stylus point. I can put my finger on it with no issues even though it is super sharp. The 60,000 cycle rate does all the work
Ptychodus04
These are carbide as well. You do have to be very careful with them. I had one catastrophic failure of a stylus from Paleo Tools. It sheared off below the collet. Bill replaced it free of charge. I'm extremely aware of where they are on the bench so I hopefully can avoid snapping one off.
