It is from a very fine-grained shale in Carmel, California. Don't remember the name of the formation any more, it was years ago, but some of the crabs are neat looking little buggers. I've attached a picture of probably the best crab in my pile o' stuff. I've got a few more, but most of them aren't as complete or well preserved.
