janvanwinckel
Can someone help me identifying these fossils which we found in Thumama, Saudi? Found them on a fossil hunting trip with my son and we are curious whether they are actually fossils?
doushantuo
yes,they are fossils,mostly mollusca:bivalves("sea shells"/oyster/clams,etc),an ammonite,possibly a gastropod(snail).possibly a coral,possibly a brachiopod("lamp shell",NOT related to molluscs). Nice finds! Any size indication possible?(ruler?)
Doctor Mud
The second group look like concretions to me.
Miocene_Mason
Oops you posted this thread twice, I posted on the other one... here's what I posted: The last picture is geological, maybe concretions. In the first picture you have a few gastropods (snails) and shells, I'm not sure if they are bivalve or brachiopod. The large thing appears to be a horn (rugose) coral or stromatolite? I will do some research as to the age, which should help. I can't find any references to thumama mountain, so can you tell where it is on this map? This will give us the geologic age and should help give firm identifications. Never mind, just found it! Should be Cretaceous in age! Nice finds! Happy hunting, Mason

janvanwinckel
I uploaded some individual photos. I found these fossils in Thumamah national park 80km north of Riyadh. On the slopes of Thumamah mountains.

It looks like you have a partial echnoderm (sanddollar) and a cross section of a horn coral as well, cool finds! 3 minutes ago, janvanwinckel said: I uploaded some individual photos. Keep looking, you have a chance of finding large vertebrates like icthyosaurs, mosasaurs, and even a small chance to get dinosaur bones!
