Looks like a giant isopod?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Was recently on a short break to Rottnest Island in Western Australia and found a bunch of these in the rocks near the beach on the east coast of the island. I thought they looked like giant isopods but have no idea when they are from or if I am remotely close?

Any suggestions?

Ta

Marine isopods, crustaceans, move around quickly on lots of legs; chitons, mollusks, have hard shells and move very very slowly.

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.

Thanks DPS Ammonite, as soon as I knew what they were called I found 'em on Google. You guys are brilliant :-)

It is always a treat to see those critters clinging to beach rocks.

Come to think of it, it is always a treat to be in the vicinity of a beach.....

Hi,

Chitons always have 8 plates, we can see them correctly on your photo. Have a look in my signature, there is a link towards publications on chitons.

Here is one from my collection :

I was at the beach once and I picked up a rock with fossil trilobites. That was until they started moving...

Do you know their species ?

Spoonman, I have forgotten : have a look on my signature, there is a link (the 2nd one -> "Polyplacophora") to publications about recent chitons ;)

@Coco I do not. I will have a look to see if I can determine, however, the link to the Polyplacophora files does not work :)

It could also be that my current tank parameters only allow them to get so big, but I haven't seen any over 1/2" for sure.
