Hey Everyone,

I know these get posted regularly but I'm hoping to get some advice on a Spinosaurus claw I purchased. Its a little beat up but a decent price and would be a first hand claw for me.

Cons: The light color I know is usually associated with bone thats been carved,  its 6 inches and not a bad price  which Troodon will say are two large red flags.

Pros: The tip fell off in shipping and I can say it is hollow inside, I THINK the grain of the bone follows the curve of the claw.

I'm curious to hear what the forum thinks.

To me this looks good the blood grove runs nice and evenly, yes there are some breaks in it that's not the problem the problem is the way its a Moroccan panic job of quick lets get the super glue and coat it all over it. That will be the part you need to prep there also looks like there are gap fills in the breaks but other than that i think you have a really nice claw here.

Can you provide me a photo of the proximal end and a dorsal view.

Not sure how best to handle this but if I compare your claw to two large one in my collections and others I see on the web it does not do well.  I'm just providing you my observations.

First, the overall profile of a typical Spinosaurid hand claw is a slight curve and not bow shaped like yours.  The first two claws are from my collection the others off the web.

Second,  your claw indeed has a nice blood groove but its width is consistent to the tip.  If you look at these other claws the blood groove is widest at the proximal end and tapers toward the tip to form a U groove channel on both sides at the tip.  Towards the tip the ventral side actually extends further out than the dorsal side.  You can see it in the following picture.   With your claw both top and bottom surfaces are even with the blood groove running between them.

One more observation is that the as you look toward back end of your claw its fairly flat and tapers slightly while my 7 inch claw proximal end becomes fairly fat and looks like an articulation surface20180118_132406.jpg.fcabbba75eb0759d8fcadadbe8f492ad.jpg

Ventral view of my other claw.  Same comments as my larger one.

I'll throw up some more pictures mostly because my last ones were poorly lit. They are all the same claw.

Thanks Troodon for your opinion. I would agree the blood groove should be a little thicker to start and the back is a little funny. I'm having doubts on this claw now.
