ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2009) — Research at Virginia Tech has shown that the oldest complex life forms -- living in nutrient-rich oceans more than 540 million years ago – likely fed by osmosis.

I was taught this back in high school, and really to me it does make perfect sense with Osmosis being a primitive technique.
