Spinosauridae Vertebrae?

Recommended Posts

My eyes are not so good when it comes to Kem Kem material. What do you guys think of this vertebrae? Is it indeed Spinosauridae? It looks to me like the process has been reworked, or repaired.

What you have is a centrum with the processes composited to it.  Very common occurence. I'm also not sure thats a caudal centrum

Great, thanks! Thought the processes looked off

Short answer: No, probably not.

Long Answer:

The vertebra in the first post is indeed a composite. Quite a bad one too. Both the prezygapophyses and the dorsal process seem to have been glued on. Those pieces are likely random pieces of bone from the same area.

The centrum looks a little better and is real. But as Troodon already said, it might not be a caudal vertebra (which is what this has been reconstructed to look like). Generally Spinosaurid caudal vertebra have a little more box shape. This centrum looks much more like a dorsal vertebra to me. It could be either dinosaur or croc. But I do not think this is a centrum from a Spinosaurid. And if it's indeed a dorsal vertebra, then it's definitely not Spinosaurid.

So yeah, likely an indeterminate dorsal reptile vertebra centrum that was reconstructed and sculpted to make it look like a Spinosaurid caudal vertebra. Definitely stay away from this one. There are much, much better specimens out there on the market all the time.

Here is what a nice one should look like

While that is indeed a Spinsoaurid caudal vertebra. And it's quite nice, it's important to note that the tip of the dorsal process has been restored and is not original.
