worthy 55
I think the two holes in the jaw are where the tusk would have been. It's my bone!!!
megateeth
Again WOW! That jaw looks almost like a baby Mastodon jaw very cool. Thanks, The thing is that it did not seem long enough to be a Croc or Gator jaw. It is very thick. I will have to get better photos. megateeth
I think the two holes in the jaw are where the tusk would have been. There are actually four holes on the outside that go to two holes on the inside. I thought two might be nostrils but could not figure out the other two. worthy 55
I am not sure but I think some of those amimals did have little tusk on the bottom jaw. I'll try to look it up . Some one will let us both know I am sure. If it is what I think it is it sure is a small one. (Gomphotherium maybe) Edited October 4, 2009 by worthy 55 It's my bone!!! megateeth
I am now sure but I think some of those type of amimals did have little tusk on the bottom jaw. I'll try to look it up . Some one will let us both know Iam sure. If it is what I think it is it sure is a small one. (Gomphotherium maybe) I think you guys are right. You can see ridges on the inside of the jaw. I thought it was where small teeth went but it looks like a Mastodon root would fit in. It would have been very small though. These two show the two holes on the outside of each side. From the inside you see the two holes that attach to the four on the outside. On the right you see the ridge where the tooth would have gone. Thanks for the Help on this. It is pretty cool. megateeth
I like how you think a 3 inch mako is small not a bad weeks worth LOL... I did not mean it that way. I would rather find a 3" Mako than a 5" Meg. Megateeth Fossils - Megalodon Teeth, Other Shark Teeth and Info about Megalodon shark tooth collecting. 32fordboy
Absolutely mastodon. I think the holes on the inside are for blood supply and nerves. Edited October 4, 2009 by 32fordboy www.nicksfossils.com

So perhaps the jaw could be too. The soul of a Fossil Hunter is one that is seeking, always.
megateeth
What are you doing with so many teeth? I keep most of them but sell some to keep my diving habit going. For me the hunt is the most exciting part. Owning them is secondary. Megateeth Fossils - Megalodon Teeth, Other Shark Teeth and Info about Megalodon shark tooth collecting. megateeth
Absolutely mastodon. I think the holes on the inside are for blood supply and nerves. 32fordboy
The two holes in the center would have been the tusks. Baby mastodons had tusks that eventually fell out. The holes to the side of the tusk holes-I'm not quite sure why they go all the way through. My mastodon jawbone has those too. You can see it in the photo attached. It could be gomphothere, but I don't know enough about gomphs to say. The tooth in the first post does look to be gomphothere. worthy 55
I wounder if that animal was an unborn calf and was a by product of the killing of it's mother. I say that because of it's small size what do you think? Edited October 4, 2009 by worthy 55 It's my bone!!!
32fordboy
I suppose it could be possible, but after seeing how small some of the teeth get, the small size of the jaw seems appropriate to me. There are mammoth teeth on the market that are less than 3/4" tall including the roots. worthy 55
The little mastodon jaw I found is only about 16" total length and it was a very young amimal. So with a jaw length of only a little over 6" it must have been real young. Here are some quick pictures of mine. The milk (spit) tooth is the only tooth missing in this jaw.
