megateeth
The little mastodon jaw I found is only about 16" total lenght and it was a very young amimal. So with a jaw lenght of only a little over 6" it must have been real young. Here are some quick pictures of mine. The milk (spit) tooth is the only tooth missing in this jaw. That is one of the coolest things I have seen. Did you find that in a river. It is amazing. I assume the teeth were with the jaw? Unreal!!! I think that is a gomp jaw section. Thanks, I always have trouble telling the difference. Edited October 4, 2009 by megateeth Megateeth Fossils - Megalodon Teeth, Other Shark Teeth and Info about Megalodon shark tooth collecting. Harry Pristis
Bill . . . I don't think this is an elephant mandible. Consider dugong. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
megateeth
Bill . . . I don't think this is an elephant mandible. Consider dugong. That is interesting. I do not find much dugong material here that I know of. What are the holes for if not tusks? 32fordboy
I always trust Mr. Pristis. There are some pics at the link below (1139 and 1140). They are small but seem to show the four holes. Very interesting. http://www.mammalogy.org/mil_images/MSLSirenia.htm Nick P.S. I guess I jumped the gun saying Mastodon. Live and learn. worthy 55
Bill, I think Harry got it I never even thought of dugong that would account for the size. Thanks Harry. Edited October 4, 2009 by worthy 55 It's my bone!!!

32fordboy
Mr. Pristis, what tipped you off that it was dugong-just the size, or are there certain traits you look for? Nick www.nicksfossils.com

Harry Pristis
Mr. Pristis, what tipped you off that it was dugong-just the size, or are there certain traits you look for? Nick Please, Nick . . . . . "Mr. Pristis" was my father. Just call me "Captain Marvelous." How did I lean in the direction of dugong? Small teeth, massive jaw, large foramina, the curve of the jaw, etc. ...Just experience, I guess. You can call it intuition if you define intuition as the synthesis of all one's accumulated experiences applied to a new situation. . . . . . And then I looked at a line-drawing in a book. I can't explain it any better than that. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
