Hi. This is a picture of a stone I found near Whitby several years ago.

I have always thought it looks like a footprint but no idea if it is just a coincidence that it looks like this.

The sample is well cleaned and the shape is an imprint in the stone. Photos are the best I can do with my phone.

Hoping with all the experts on here that someone can help.

I think it's not a footprint, but maybe trace fossil of some sort. The weathered conchoidal fractures of the matrix leading me to flint or similar rock (silex).

Sorry. Just realised none of the photos have the tape measure in them. The ‘print’ is 4cm in length.

Just a suggestive fracture/ erosion feature, I think.

Thanks. Was just a romantic theory. Nice to imagine but I never really took it seriously. Would have been  great if it had been though.

This is how you train your eyes to find fossils.

Look for patterns - order amongst the disorder!

I would have picked it up just to be on the safe side. ;)

The most seasoned professionals often collect pieces that take extended periods of time to determine if it is actually a fossil or not. I read about an example just the other day.

Thank you on your kind comments. I do have a good eye for patterns and try to pick up anything unusual.
