Unfortunately, I believe it is just an ironstone concretion; i.e., geologic not fossil. A closer look at it doesn't reveal any structure, but rather looks like an iron-rich sandstone.  But I can definitely see why you picked it up.  I would have taken it home for a closer look as well.

The shape is very provocative but I don't see anything in the photos that says fossil. I would have picked it up also and taken it home as a most interesting mineral specimen.
