Nicholas
A quick question for you, do you usually split stones for fossils or find them as is? In my area I've had the best luck just finding them as is, but I did find my first fossil by splitting this week giving me a tiny positive and negative section of a Calamites. I'm just curious of your methods so I can adapt it and see if it is helpful to my collecting.

Hi Nicholas Sometimes I split the the shale ,Other times, it is nature that does the job, cold, rain but in this case it must be reactive because the shales do not like moisture and disintegrate quickly ... often it is the luck factor that allows me to split the "good stone"...... bruno
Nicholas
Thanks Bruno, I'm going to try splitting a few reasonable looking stones every trip in an effort to get lucky.
Terry Dactyll
Bruno..... There was a layer at Crockhey that produced a lot of cones, unfortunately before I started to collect there.... when they were backfilling, I managed to have one evening searching through some cone rich material, but being nodular and large nodules at that, not many wanted to open properly.... I did manage to get a couple.... Nice Finds! Cheers Steve... And Welcome if your a New Member...

Shamalama
Nice Strobus, never found one myself... yet! Nicholas - I, like Bruno, find most of the good stuff by splitting. Surface finds are good too, but serve mostly to say "here is a good rock to split, or a spot to look more closely at". -Dave __________________________________________________ Geologists on the whole are inconsistent drivers. To them, the roadcut is a portal, a fragment of a regional story, a proscenium arch that leads their imaginations into the earth and through the surrounding terrain. - John McPheeIf I'm going to drive safely, I can't do geology. - John McPheeCheck out my Blog for more fossils I've found: http://viewsofthemahantango.blogspot.com/
