Member of the Month - May 2020 - Plax

Kane

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the monosyllabic month of May. In many parts of the world, spring flowers are in full bloom, spring cleaning is underway, and the days get a bit warmer and longer. As we continue making our way through these unprecedented times, hopefully our thoughts never have to stray too far from fossils.

By unanimous staff decision, this month's crown goes to:

:yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1: Plax:yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1:

Our man in Rocky Point, North Carolina has been with us for more than a decade, at times stealthily providing expertise and generally being an all-round informative resource for so many here over the years. If there are crabs or sponges within even a one mile radius, we should be suitably convinced he will see and find them before anyone else. His is a steady presence here, and it has been simply oversight that it has taken this long for us to grant this well deserved award. With a vast amount of experience and knowledge, he does us this forum an enormous credit.

Congratulations, Don! Wear this Crown with pride, as you have earned it!

On behalf of the staff here on TFF, congratulations!

Please tell us your story - how you came to fossils, and how you came to TFF!

A Bright Golden Crown Hangs by Getty

 It is a pleasure to pass the crown to such  a deserving member of TFF. Wear it with pride!! Incidentally, I did wipe it down with alcohol to rid it of any corona virus.

Long overdue recognition of an outstanding member!  Congratulations! :yay-smiley-1: :yay-smiley-1:

I will add that Plax is also a model citizen in terms of interacting with professional paleontologists of several stripes, which has resulted in a string of published papers.  We encourage our members to be the eyes on the ground for Paleontology, as there are too few employed paleontologists to get out and look at more than a small fraction of the available outcrops.  Plax really walks the walk.

Of course I should also mention that his real life name is also Don, and that can't be a bad thing.

Not a bad thing at all. Archaic or not, definition #4 hits the nail on the head. ;) Congrats, Don!

I would like to add that Don is an old school collector who has no need of motors when muscle power will do.  Pictures are from our November 2019 trip on the Cape Fear River.
