Trying to figure out what this is a fragment of? It appears to have an enamel coating but I’m not familiar with mammal teeth….possible tapir tooth fragment? Found on Amelia island!

Possibly ironstone?

No it's a tooth - it's either tapir or mastodon.

@Austintharris can you take some closer pictures from on top of it? crop out most of the background, just closer on the tooth itself.

The side currently facing up towards the ceiling - leave it in that position, but take some closer pictures from all angles. I'm leaning juvenille mastodon cusp fragment, but it may be tapir.

@Lone Hunter Didn't mean to be so abrupt - but you can see in the last picture it's got very visible enamel banding - the hunter-schreger bands. Prime indicator for Mastodon fragment - but the shape is giving me tapir vibes.

Your good no worries! Looked like the same enamel was on broken edge so... I'm overly paranoid about ironstone since here in Texas it likes to fool people. :)

I should rephrase - that's exactly where you can see the enamel bands, is on the broken sides!
For comparison - my Mastodon cusp I found recently. Obviously mine is blue/white, but you can see the banding on the broken section. 491B91A3-A227-46FF-B00E-DD83F2B6A61E.jpeg.22d58f364c6dc11222576b338f16781b.thumb.jpeg.f056d7f62687f7bf0e7e87d23491a58b.jpeg
