Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show 2023 PHOTOS

Lots of really nice fossils! That last White River Fm. tortoise is especially interesting! It is pretty rare for a WR tortoise to have the skull, partial skeleton, and a possible pathology!

Thank you for sharing, @Troodon:)

Cheers and Shalom,

I wonder how that edmontosaurus bone slab was extracted from the quarry. Hopefully not so many bones were destroyed during the process :headscratch:

I would love to prep something like that.

I'm sure many bones were sacrificed to make a nice rectangular block.  And it must weigh a ton or two... they must have used a crane.  I certainly hope it is a genuine bone bed slab, and not a composite like you see with many large Green River fish slabs and Moroccan multi-trilobites.

I spoke with Brock and he indicated that the museum commissioned the replica from the Kenyan finds.    Unfortunately, very few skull elements were found, and the skull is based on using other Abelisaurid skulls as model.    Dr Joe Sertich is still studying the elements found so everything you see is subject to change.

Edmontosaurus bonebed Block  @jpc

With all of the discussion I went back to get some more information

First I took some additional photos and added them to the initial post.    Taking photos the first couple of days is difficult with all the crowds and using just one hand to shoot.  These are a lot better and mostly in focus.

The block is real, prepped and contains 8 T rex teeth.  The great news is that its heading to the Museum in Houston so it will be available to the public to see.   The individual I was talking with did not know how it was extracted just that it was prepared as is.   I agree with jpc that many bones were sacrificed to get to this shape which is fine with me considering the density.

The Keno Venue is huge and has doubled in size since last year.  Most everything for sale, few fossils, tons of minerals, jewelry and trinkets.  You need a map to get around it's a city of huge, big and small tents

What about these bone beds with the plaster jacket around it?

Are they all jumbled together and a plaster jacket wrapped around it to give them a more real feel?

Scrolling trough this topic, from the start, watching all these pinpointed locations, seeing at these big tents, stores, even motels ? streets and such, I just can't help but feeling overwhelming. It looks almost impossible to see everything, it looks half as big as Belgium lol

Its one of my dreams to visit this fair, but how big can one fair be? It looks like you need a week to visit everything, with the risk of the good being sold. Making this trip for a European is expensive, plane tickets, hotel, rent a car, but mostly time. I would be very stressed knowing I did not see some other Dinosaur merchants while im miles away and could not make it in one day.

Why issnt there just a major big expo showroom like we have in Europe, like for example Munchen , dat would make this much easier for the customers. I prefer to see everything at once, buy the same day, perhaps for the really expensive items visit the day after while you had some time to consider.

Just some thought about Tucson.

you must go there one day in the future. It is really too huge for one day or a week. But, it´s a great event, incredible fair. When I visit the show for the first time many years ago I was really overloaded... This show is addicting. Something special, one place in the world. Totally different to all the other shows I have seen, european and US. Save some money, look early for a cheap motel (there are some), book a small car and enjoy. We will come back 2024 :Jumping:

Yes of course and primarily to hold the assemblage together during transport.  My guess most all have been reassembled on a new matrix bed.  Some are clearly fabricated  others composited but some have all real bones.

You can easily focus on the areas you are interested in and not the entire show.  If its Dinosaurs 3-4 days is more than adequate because they are focused in handful of venues that I mentioned at the beginning of this thread.  You can see a lot because some venues open at different times giving you the ability to get around.

Hey I've only gone to 6 venues in these photos there are 40 but most are gem and minerals not fossils.

Most collectors running around the show are by themselves, their significant other if them came are at venues that sell jewelry or trinkets.
