I was visiting Fergus, Ontario, earlier today and found some fossils along the Grand River. I am unsure what they are: piece 1 (first 3 images) is definitely a fossil, but I do not know for sure what. Is piece 2 a fossil or some geologic formation?

Piece 1 is ~1.5cm

Piece 2 is ~3.5cm

Piece 1 seems to include this protrusion. The hole from the first 2 pictures is outlined in red.

  • GreatHoatzin changed the title to Silurian Fossil ID

It may be a void where a brachiopod shell once was, but honestly, I can't see anything else fossil like about this item.

I was hesitant to think it was a fossil as well, but the large bulge (above the red circle in picture 3) made me think it was one.

Here are some more of the same fossils from earlier, I’m guessing it may be some sort of bivalve at this point

Here is another fossil I found today that resembled the shape of that hole, if this helps

This is the inside of a brachiopod, it appears more of the shell has been eroded away or more likely, dissolved away.

The original void you posted and some the the most recent pictures are also likely the voids and/or remains where a brachiopod used to exist, not uncommon when the rock has been re-mineralized which is common in the Silurian dolomites.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure if it was a brachiopod or a bivalve.

Here is a previous post that found an item similar to your one picture:

It does indeed look just like it.
