Found in Pierre shale in Sd. Might be from a concretion. the 2 parts are not from same creature it seems.

Was also wondering what species it could be? Thanks

Not sure there is enough left to make any kind of positive ID.

Yes ammonite.  There's likely enough suture structure showing to make a positive ID, but I'm not resourced to do so.  Comparing the suture structures of the two pieces should confirm (or not) if the two are of the same species.

I meant that the 2 piece don't fit together. Id assume they are both same species.

can you show an end on view?  It looks Placenticeras ish, but the end on view is needed to ID it to species.  End on so we can see the cross section shape.

I'm with JP on this one.  Need to see the end view.  Hopefully some keel showing.  I would also agree and my best guess would be Placenticeras?

I can make sense of the penultimate photo... it seems to have a very rounded venter, making it not Placenticeras.  The other pix are tough to read.

Maybe Pachydiscus

I looked at pics and looks like it could be that. Didn't see that type on the Pierre shale wiki.
