garyc
About a year ago I posted pics of a distal camelid cannon bone. http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/48651-cannon-bone/?hl=camelops Now I think I have the proximal end. This piece measures 5.5 inches long and the widest measurement is 2.75 inches. Is it camel? If so, would the size suggest camelops? Thanks. garyc
Just a friendly bump! BTW, the mineralization and the attached matrix of the 2 pieces seem very similar.
RichW9090
It does look as though it might be a proximal camel metacarpal. Edited August 23, 2015 by RichW9090 The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
jpevahouse
Camel metcarpals have that split at the bottom vs horses which have one continuous bone.
garyc
Thanks for the confirmation. Just wanted to be sure.
Harry Pristis
For comparison: http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
garyc
So the longer split distinguishes the metatarsal from the metacarpal?
RichW9090
Wrong end, Harry. The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
garyc
Wrong end, Harry. I did post a link to the distal end I found last year, so Harry's reference helps with that. But is there is a distinguishing characteristic of the proximal end between metatarsal and metacarpal as well? Harry Pristis
Oops. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
garyc
Oh.... my proximal piece looks more like the metatarsal and my distal piece a metacarpal. Also, my proximal measures 68mm.
