They are definitely stems coming off of the horsetail, but they are relatively well preserved. Great find!

(I don't know what the technical name for horsetail stems is but anyway)

Excellent find. Did you get it in Pennsylvania?

Thanks guys! I find lots of Calamite impressions as well as 3D stem casts...this is the first ever found in many years of fossil collecting.

Very nice example of a calamites stem and asterophyllites! BTW I believe these would be asterophyllites versus annularia.

A superb specimen!  Annularia is distinguished from Asterophyllites by its starburst circle of leaves in contrast to the upward cup of leaves in Asterophyllites. We have found carbonless impressions of this in the red permian shales near Sedona Arizona, and It is always so exciting to see the leaflets compared to just finding the very common trunks and stems.

Wonderful specimen! It reminds me of the cover of the book by Remy and Remy (1977), Die Floren des Erdaltertums, which also features branches with Asterophyllites-whorles borne on a Calamites stem.
