Ecphora Gardnerae St. Mary's formation from Maryland

Sharkbyte

This is a very beautiful medium to large size Ecphora. It measures 2-3/4" long by 2-9/16" wide and 1-3/4" tall. This Ecphora is from the Miocene epoch and was found in the St. Mary's formation in Maryland. It is much darker in color from the Ecphora I am used to finding in North Carolina. This Ecphora suffered some kind of injury to the shell while the Mollusk was alive and the damaged shell healed. It appears to be some sort of compression fracture and is round in shape and slightly smaller than a dime. The damaged area is slightly concave and is a different color than the surrounding shell. It resembles a tooth mark, possible from a Crocodile like tooth but not sure. It does not appear to have punctured all the way through but deffinately crushed the shell in a circular mark. The ribs at the injury site do not perfectly align with the ribs on the other side of the fracture.
