I think it was actually a butter knife that I was shown with. Most anything metal with a shape that resonates a little (think tuning fork) will do.

Those are mammal bones and I would say they are very modern. Is the whitish area on the leg bone somewhat greasy feeling?  I collect a lot of modern skeletons and it looks like material that is relatively recently decayed.

The use of a coin is strongly discouraged. Only Americans know the size of their parts and we are so many on this forum, we foreigners! Nothing will ever be as good as a ruler in inches or cm, or even better: the size in the text!

And if you don’t have a ruler, it’s easy to make a cardboard ruler or anything to put on pictures.
