I thoroughly enjoy reading your trip reports and think it is cool you take your dogs on the excursions.

Thank for you for reading along...those two creatures need be out there as much as I do. I'm always on the hunt for a gem of a fossil as they are for a gem of a jackrabbit! :)

Canyons, arroyos, mesas and buttes.... and hoodoos! ...make it all worthwhile I think, fossils or no.

You sure get a lot of pics up.... Takes me forever to prepare and post a series of them.  :tiphat:

You are correct about those landscapes...but fossils do make it so much better. :D

With the newest max on size allowance for photos, it makes it pretty easy to upload. Also, now if you go over it just removes some pics to get down to the max, and then uploads...rather than before it would just kick out the upload and you would have to start over. The evolution of this place has been pretty cool to witness.

I've enjoyed all 4 pages of your post. Dought I'll ever make it there. I have close friends in Utah. So, that might have to do next time.

May I ask, what is the soil composition made of? Is it difficult to extract specimens?

Thanks for checking it out! Utah has some great places to roam as well. As for extracting specimens, the last time I collected for the museum we dug a turtle out of fluvial (hard white sand) deposit and that was a bear to get out, and also a sacrum of some sort from shaley deposit that was much more forgiving.

  • Thank You 1

Awesome landscapes Mike. Love the rock formations and petrified wood. I sure do miss it. Thanks for sharing these.

Thank you, Jeffrey...we'll have to make the badlands a part of your next visit! :)

You are right, those improvements make it easier, but I take all my photos in large size setting and have to shrink them all down before uploading them. Not gonna start fooling around with file size settings on my camera!

Well, almost a year passed since Red, Quita, @Opuntia and I were roaming the badlands...

This trip was a good study in starting to understand the different members of the Kkf.

I hope you all discover knowledge along side your specimens.

As always,

Happy Hunting!

Ooooh....aaahhhh....lot's of critter bones. That Cat's Eye marble is also interesting. Looks like 1940's vintage with a lot of traveling stories to tell.  Did you collect the marble?

Yes, lots of creature bits...fun to inspect. I did collect the marble, as I do whenever I find one in the wild...

Thank you, Alex. Indeed, lots and lots of turtle bits. I should probably take better notes on the turtles from each Member to see if they are all the same...the other creatures change from Member to Member so the turtles may follow suit.

Bittersweet... thanks for sharing your journey.  ;)

When you make it this way, we'll go see it in person. For now, I hope these photos give a sense of the wondrous wilds that I wander. Thanks for "tagging along". :)

Oh my. That is a paleo wonderland. How many miles hiking did you put in for the sights displayed?

Different from the wonderland you navigate but a wonderland indeed. According to @Opuntias OnX, we were right around 10 miles.

Awesome photos Mike. Must have been incredible to be there in that wondrous barren landscape. Cool looking turtle frags and wood. Hopefully I’ll be out there again before too long.

Thank you, Jeffrey. I have been eager to get back out there but work and weather have not permitted an adventure...hopefully soon!

A little FYI - the main author of the bulletin you posted back in 2015...about the ammonites in Crittenden Springs, NV...lives a few miles up I-15 from me. I dug through the webernet and found his address and land line phone #. Might be making a phone and visit... if the call goes well. He's now 81 and retired...but still pretty active. I've seen one picture of his "Fossil Museum" in his home...online. Unless, I'm recalling a different scenario ( happens often ) he also might sell or trade fossils. Could be wrong there.
