JSERTL
I seen a topic lastnight that mentioned "ripple marks". I'd never heard of it but had an idea that I had some & turns out that I have a bunch of these & some of them probably weigh a few hundred pounds. I didn't know what they were called but common sense told me what I was looking at. I had planned on cobblestoning my driveway with them originally because to me they look like big stone polaroids of ancient waves & ripples going across the water. This is not a photo of mine but looks exactly like what I have except mine are like 1ft thick. I'll get some pictures if anybody needs or wants any. So what can I learn from these & what can they tell me?

ynot
At one time that rock was mud under water. 21 hours ago, JSERTL said: Right, but what do they tell me? 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." jpc
They were deposited in a shallow body of water that was large enough to have waves (doesn't really take much if you have wind). There are ways to tell which way the currents were going but I am not familiar with them.
JSERTL
I knew this area had been under water, a couple of times from what I've read.
ynot
Ripple marks are neat environment fossils, but do not have much to tell beyond what is stated above. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Myrmica
Yes, and we can add that the bottom was shallow enough for wave action to have an impact, and it was made of fine grained sand.
