FossilDAWG
I got a couple of bone pieces from that material you said was Ochopee near where we had to jump that ditch. I'll post a photo when I get home from work. One piece I think might be a base of a deer antler but I'm not 100% on that. Don
Shellseeker
Some of my finds from Saturday... I usually find what I look for.... Some corals: I also found large blocks of coral reef ... only brought one back. Some large shells. A Geoduck, a couple of nice Lobatus, and a nice Chesapecten It is amazing how much makes it thru whole. Medium and smaller shells..... Th This last photo has many fragile shells. A very few were broken on the way Finally I grabbed one of the smaller Spiny Jewel Boxes, I had found at SMR Aggragates from 7 years ago. There were thousands at SMR larger than this one, and none this size last Saturday. Great site. Fantastic day. 6 The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"

I won't hazard a guess on most of the corals as they likely have changed since the Eocene and I'm much better with (living, non-skeletal) corals found on the reefs. The one pictured above certainly looks like the linear (not hemispherical) form of Manicinia areolata (aka Rose Coral) that are often found growing loose in the sand off the actual reefs. Someone seems to believe that this species does go back a bit in time so it may very well be the same: http://southernarrow.com/manicina-areolata-fossil-rose-coral-ma7-p-2371.html Here are a few pictures of a living MARE from Pedro Bank offshore south of Jamaica. MikeR
NMITA lists Manicina areolata back to the Lower Pliocene of the Dominican Republic LINK. I have found it in the Upper Pliocene Tamaimi Formation in Lee and Collier Counties, the Caloosahatchee in Charlotte County and the Middle Pleistocene Bermont Formation in Palm Beach County. 1 "A problem solved is a problem caused"--Karl Pilkington "I was dead for millions of years before I was born and it never inconvenienced me a bit." -- Mark Twain

You are very fortunate, Mike to have those 48 hour days... It is the only way I can imagine that you have the time to do all that you do. The same coral species you find in 4 different locations far from home, plus your great efforts on TFF cataloguing a huge number of Southeastern shells. I would say that it is WE that are very fortunate--fortunate to have such great subject experts here on the forum. Really wouldn't be such a useful forum if we were all asking questions and nobody had any answers. Cheers. -Ken
