Earth sciences education lacking - The Atlantic

I've long been aware of people's appalling lack of knowledge about Geography, Geology, etc, but I've always assumed it was just due to their lack on interest, but maybe there is a systemic factor also, according to this article:

The late geology professor, Eldridge Moores, of UC Davis in California successfully counteracted the bias of geology not being able to be used as a high school credit for a laboratory science for admission to University of California schools.
