Let me present you OUR Alle alle. We didn't gave it a name because we had it for only about a week. That was in December 2007. After a storm, one of our neighbour came and in his truck was his apprentice accompanied by his father. The boy was holding a cardboardbox as if he were holding shards. His father explained us he had found it in his garden and the neighbour told us it was a bird, without any precision. When we opened the box we were surprised and marvelled to discover that tiny and very cute penguin. The luck it had is that that day i had froze out fish for dinner. So we kept the fish for our unwilling guest and we ate eggs. He drank rain water or tap water after the chlorine had evaporated. We weighted it, looked after its dejections, its plumage and its behaviour to detect if something was going bad. We saw it was a penguin like bird but had no real idea of it's real identity : it was found at about 50 km as the crow flies inside the land. And it's an arctic bird so, when it migrates towards south, it doesn't stop in too hot waters. They go as far as the Portuguese coasts where there are rocks among a relatively cold water. The French waters with rocks are too hot for them, at least in the South-West. So we never saw one before and it took us almost two days to discover what it was. Storm = electricity cut-off = no internet, so we used books : ours, neighbours', ... all the people nearby came to visit it. When it wasn't eating or drinking we put it in our tub with some water inside (so very short showers without heating the room, and only when it was in the kitchen). Every morning the first thing everybody did was to look if it was well. Before going to school the children always said "hi" to it before leaving the bathroom. When the storm was completely over, we brang it to a health center for marine birds. It was healthy and it had noticeably bounced back. fifbrindacier
For that one, i ask you to answer three questions : What is fossilized here ? Where do this Come from ? When did i found it ? You can try to answer to all the questions (feel free to ask any questions you need to ask) at the same time but will have to wait for my answer to make another proposition. Hint : it is Jurassic. Edited November 2, 2022 by fifbrindacier "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." jpc
I am late to this game… not going to play but the dovekie caught my attention. To clarify in case anyone is asking what a penguin is doing both in france (they live in the southern hemisphere) and flying in a storm. (Penguins are flightless). The French word ‘pingouin’ translates to auk/murre (alcids). But i think there is a great amount of play and localization if language there and it also gets tamslated as its false homonym, ‘penguin’. I grew up thinking pingouin meant penguin cuz thst is what my parents taught me. Also, dovekies are called ‘little auk’ in the UK. They commonly get blown onshore by storms but otherwise live out on the open ocean. glad it was sent home. The little bird was as lucky as you were to meet. I have been birding for 50 years, including many north atlantic years, and gave yet to see a dovekie. now back to you regularly scheduled program

Penguin and pingouin can be considered as false friends in that case. It's uncommon to see those birds blown onshore this far. The only sea bird we see at that distance of the coast are the seagulls and the cormorants. "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux."
