Winner of the March 2023 Invertebrate/Plant Fossil of the Month

I won with a Metacoceras! I’ve managed to lose this contest a few times over the past couple of years. There are many fascinating invertebrate fossils entered into the monthly poll. I didn’t think I had a chance against trilobites, and I am fortunate nobody entered a Paleozoic insect.

Winning with this specimen—Metacoceras—is surprising, but after reviewing my collection, it is the best example of one I’ve collected in four years. The steinkern shows the camerae well, and you can see a large body chamber—often underestimated in ratio to the phragmocone in fossils. Local marine limestone can develop a rind, a soft calcite-leached zone. It leaves these very detailed steinkern and shell impressions. But, one soft blow from a three-pound sledgehammer would reduce this fossil to a brown circle. Preparation of the fossils is challenging because you can quickly destroy them.

I have avoided naming a species because Metacoceras is a known garbage taxon. An author probably erected a new species for every node shape or size variation, camera shape, and other feature. Kummel (1953) reported on the American Triassic coiled nautiloids but gave a wealth of information about the Carboniferous and Permian genera. His inferred phylogeny chart indicates where Metacoceras sits compared to others in the Tainoceratidae.

I also find the species Metacoceras clinocostatum locally; they are relatively small and have similar ventrolateral shoulder nodes, but the nodes continue and traverse as ridges across the flank.

That concludes my information on Metacoceras; I’m so happy I finally won. :yay-smiley-1:
