Just dendrites of a weird sort?

Fossilizable

Recommended Posts

These discolorations, perfectly flush with the rock surface, are in sandstone from the Matilija or Coldstone formation, I think. Some of the pattern suggests dendrites maybe, but perhaps it's organic in origin? About 8 cm long, 3 wide. Ventura County, CA. Thanks!

These look like cross sections of pectinid bivvaes to me.

What is the size of these markings?

EDIT: I missed the size listed in the post.

8 cm. Is rather large for graptolites.

Thanks for the responses! I'll get back up there with a ruler, but just to clarify I meant to say each of the two imprints of a sheath (or whatever) is about 8 cm long. For what it's worth.

Possibly crab parts in cross-section?

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
