New Members Chris Carpenter Posted September 19, 2023 New Members Share Posted September 19, 2023 These were found in the cliff face just north of Matoaka Lodges along the west shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Not sure which of the three formations is exposed here I believe St. Mary's? Some of these were as large as your hand and flaked off identical layers below. Thomas.Dodson
Looks like the large bivalve Isognomon maxillata. 2
FossilDAWG
I agree. The hinge of Isognomon has distinctive teeth, and often the beak area (with the hinge) is what is preserved as it is thicker than the rest of the shell. Don
New Members Chris Carpenter Posted September 20, 2023 Author New Members Share Posted September 20, 2023 Found a few of these protruding from the cliff north of the beach at Matoaka Lodges. Some were as big as your hand. They tend to flake off leaving identical layers below. This area appears to be the mid point of the so called Calvert Cliffs locale along the west shore. Likely St. Mary's formation? I believe Miocene era?
