Now this will really sadden me if it's fake. It's a Permian Period Captorhinus reptile from Lawson, Oklahoma. Please give me some good news.PXL_20231030_215738586.thumb.jpg.cc89ca0f10eb2dccec79839c2fd6f141.jpg

I'm not sure what it is but it does appear to either be really common or it's produced. There are quite a few of similar preservation on auction sites in very similar matrix.  Resin is normally the choice of duplication for reptile fossils from what I've seen.

The fish appears to be drawn to me.  If you do a search for "fossil fish" you will get a good idea of what fossilized fishbone will look like.

Wait for more people though. There are ways to tell especially for the reptile such as looking for resin bubbles but that's the only one I know.

I'm sorry if I'm wasting your time with this, but I obviously can't tell what is real or fake.

You aren't wasting anyones time if you are earnestly trying to learn!  People here love helping.

Thanks. Unfortunately I can't react to your posts. Also unfortunate is that I made a few purchases. :default_rofl:

The reptile is fake I’ll admit. It looks like a cast to me. Especially if you zoom in on the skull. However having said that I kind of like it. If it was cheap and sold as a cast or art piece I’d pick it up to go with my other cast pieces…..

the fish is another story…. It’s just a bad bad bad fake…..

What you need to do, is when you find a fossil you wish to purchase, do a bit of research on the type of specimen you are interested in.
There are lots of scientific papers and photos online. For instance, I searched out Captorhinus, and found a number of photos of real specimens.

But you could easily do a search for "Captorhinus PDF",  and get a few papers downloaded. Read, look through the photos, and learn what is real and what looks carved.

The bottom line is, to avoid getting scammed EDUCATE YOURSELF.

Also, stay away from Moroccan and Chinese fossils. They have greater numbers of fake and composited fossils.

Don't buy fossils from instagram, tick toc, or any other social media.

I take it you don't look at pictures of fake fossils often?

The cone actually looks OK to me. Maybe a bit over aggressively prepped with the scales outlined, but probably real.

Pinus fossil images.
