JJVG
I found this walking out by my house in Vermilion County, Illinois about 7-8 years ago. I collect rocks and other things I find interesting when I go out to hike. I’ve been keeping a pile of rocks like this one and I’d like to see if anyone can identify it? It is very heavy and the little ball like structure on the inside is very odd. I’ve tried doing research but can’t find anything. I have taken a guess that it might be a ball and socket joint to something? I’m open to suggestions? Thanks
Randyw
Can we get a closeup in focus picture of the “ball”? It’s not a ball and socket joint or bone but there may be a chance it’s a crinoid calyx….. I don’t believe it is but there’s a chance so I’d like clearer pictures before ruling it out… Edited November 2, 2023 by Randyw
JJVG
Here’s a few more pictures. Let me know if you need different angles. The ball itself is smooth looking.
Andrewsucks
It is most likely just a rock, that by chance got that shape. From what I can tell it is just a piece of the rock. It's an interesting one, no matter if it is a fossil or not. I've seen many like that before when rockhounding.

JJVG
I have thought a few times I’d like to try and crack open the ball structure or try and remove. Just curious.
minnbuckeye
When I come across a rock like that in some of the areas I hunt, I think of geode full of pretty crystals inside. Do you know if your area has geodes? If so cutting it open may reveal a treasure within! If not, it is likely a concretion. .
