Creek - Don

Recommended Posts

Spent Saturday looking for fossils in the Central Texas area.  Came  across huge chunks of rocks near the road.  I decided to take a closer look.  To my surprise saw loads of fist size gastropods embedded in huge stones. Interesting to see large size gastropods concentrated in a single spot like that.  I usually see one or two at the most.   I was also in the Walnut Formation, but these rocks may come from the  Edwards formation or Austin Chalk formation.  I'm leaning more toward the Edwards Formation.

  • Creek - Don changed the title to Central Texas Gastropods

The second to last picture does look like a gastropod, but I think the other images are actually of Rudists. The Edwards Formation has many different rudists, including R. texana which spiral on themselves and have that kind of textured shell in the middle pictures.

And I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but that last picture...those are COWS, not gastropods. I think you really should be aware of that distinction. :D  Sorry, couldn't help myself....

Very interesting. Did you try to get at least one of them freed up from the matrix in order to find out more about them?

No, not yet. I wil try when I have the time.

Got out the matrix.  Jamie was right. It's a Albian rudist.
