Othniel C. Marsh
The fossil in the images below is being sold as that of a Merycoidodon, but it looks rather small for such an animal, so I wondered if it could be from a smaller Merycoidodontid or perhaps another small ungulate like Leptomeryx. Thanks in advance for any guidance Othniel
Danielb
It could be Leptauchenia which is just a smaller species of oreodont.
Othniel C. Marsh
I did wonder if that was the case, but naturally one needs to look at the dentition of the fossil to know for sure. Thanks for your guess, Danielb, but we need to hear the details from the OP. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
Othniel C. Marsh
Danielb was correct: the jaw is from the Brule Formation, Nebraska. Apologies I should have stated the location in which it was found in the first post.
