With the Holidays fast approaching, and a New Year just around the corner, we pay respect to those Members of the Month who have preceded this month's winner, and, ... take this opportunity to crown this month's winner as well.   Sorry for the delayed announcement. I have been under the weather for a bit here. (Better late, than never! )

By staff consensus, this month's MotM is:

:yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1: Andúril Flame of the West :yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1::yay-smiley-1:

Although he has only been with us for a little more than a year, Andúril has been a regular contributor, with varied knowledge about a wide array of fossils.  He is always helpful and informative.

Thanks Andúril, Flame of the West for your participation and contributions to the Forum. They are appreciated. Congratulations on this honor.

Please tell us about your journey to the Forum and fossils!

My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs.

What a pleasant surprise! Thank you for this great honor!

Reflecting on my interests in paleontology it is hard to say exactly when I contracted the bug - I've had it for as long as I can remember. As a kid I was never too far away from a dinosaur book, but even then I was far more interested in the strange creatures of the Triassic and the Paleozoic. Something about the obscurity of these creatures in the public eye made them all the more appealing. I always dreamed of having the opportunity of finding fossils - as I am sure many of you could relate to, my childhood dream was to pursue paleontology - and I still vividly recall the day that I found my first fossil. It was on a vacation to a lake in Texas, not even one that is known for fossils as far as I am aware, and by pure serendipity I stumbled upon a piece of limestone with a humble impression of a bivalve. It was no dinosaur bone but, boy, did it ever ignite the passion!

Eventually the passion subsided some as I pursued other interests, but about a year ago my passion was once again reignited when I stumbled upon a tiny, worn shark tooth on a beach. Since then I have sought out fossils in the Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia areas. Quite early in my research I came across The Fossil Forum, and like many others my first post a request for help in finding fossil localities (with the limited experience I have obtained on the difficulty of finding fossil localities, I must admit that wasn't my proudest moment :s_confused:). Even so, forum members such as @val horn and @ScottBlooded shared their best advice - exemplifying the generosity of the forum community that I would come to know so well - hoping to aid me in my quest for finding fossils. As others have mentioned, I could not begin to speak on how much knowledge I have gathered simply from reading through the posts on this forum. What success I have had in fossil hunting has in large part been fueled by support and aid from members of the forum. With some of the more basic fossils under my belt (though I do not profess to have the greatest examples), I hope to have success in some of the more obscure Mesozoic formations of the area - the Passaic Formation in the Culpeper Basin of Maryland and Virginia and the Severn Formation of Maryland. I am excited to see what the 2024 season brings, and perhaps I will have the opportunity to extend my relations with some local forum members out to the field!

Thank you again for according me this great honor and a chance to share my fossil hunting story!
