Hello everyone!

My name is L. I am excited to be here. For a few months now I have been working on building an exhibit showcasing fossils donated to my museum. However, while most of the fossils came with ID cards a sizeable amount have not. I am mostly interested in seeing if any paleontologist or fossil expert out there could help me identify these fossils :). I will make a post separate from this with all the fossil pictures and any information I was given pertaining to them.

Otherwise I am just happy I have stumbled across this forum during my research!

Welcome to TFF from Austria!

Just show off your fossils - very knowledgeable members from many parts of the world here in this forum!

You’re new here so I’ll give you a few pointers :

- do not put so much information in your title, they must be put in the text of your subject, a title must be short because it is made for research,

- put your photos for identification, but not more than 5 or 6 at a time, and all numbered, one or two fossils maximum per photo,

- make your photos on a plain and contrasting background with your fossils, and crop them,

- don’t take your fossils in your hand, put them on something,

- do not forget to give for each their size in cm or inch, do not use a coin or any other unwelcome object to give a size,

- wait for the specialists to arrive, they are numerous on the forum but are not 24/24.

And welcome ! You are in the right place to identify your objects.

Thank you, Coco. Should I make a new topic for fossil identification where I post the pictures and all that you described? Also I have quite a bit more than 5 or 6 fossils. Should I wait until the 5 or 6 are identified to post more- or make several different posts? I am actually quite new to the format of forums so I apologize for the title mishap.

Agree with @jpc, the main thing is not to tire with too many applications at once. And put them in the part of the forum that corresponds to the identification requests.

And don't hesitate to read the pinned topics, they will give you a lot of good information to make your requests :)

Welcome to the forum L! Always good to see a science educator among us, and teaching children is extra special! :)

Definitely post your fossils. We would be glad to help!

Welcome from Illinois.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

From another museum educator (former exhibit designer/director of exhibits) I applaud your effort. Fossils require location information to be valuable. The age is critical for the identification. Try first sorting them out by those with and without. Those without may still be used for hands-on touch tables.

Are you looking to do a display of local fossils, fossils around the globe, easily collected, etc. DON’T bite off too much.

We still do not know where you are. Look into local paleo societies for help and volunteers.

I have gotten location information however not age information. All fossils are from within the United States. Many are focused on local fossils. My location is actually North Texas! Austin is only a few hours south from where we are located :).

This is my first exhibit project so I figured I would consult experts for the fossils I am not sure of. Practically all the fossils are ocean creatures. The exhibit is a display case with several small fossils.

I will make my first post soon in the ID section.

Welcome from Alaska. Great to see your enthusiasm to start this project. You will get lots of help. And there are a lot of Texas fossil folk here.

Welcome from Cooke County (near Gainesville.) The Dallas Paleontological Society is a great source for hands-on help with this kind of project. See this page from our website for contact information. Don't let the name scare you. FBI is the "Fossil Bureau of Investigation."

You can use geo maps to get the ages of the formation. You are a great place find. fossils.  Also try the Dallas Club for help with Ids.
