Interesting Rock found in Hunterdon County, New Jersey: Any idea what this is? Fossil?

I found this on a recent hike in a creek bed. This is a raised impression and is shaped like a carrot. Does anyone know what this is? Is it a fossil of something? Thanks in advance.IMG_1264.thumb.jpeg.d67b130d92ee6257ccda85448a1a657f.jpeg

It appears to me to be spreiten (pl.) in a section of an invertebrate burrow.

I agree that the morphology is consistent with it being a burrow from this perspective. It might help to confirm the ID if you can show us more angles on the piece to more precisely determine its shape, however. I think it may possibly be a layer of sediment that was somehow deformed. Ice or mineral crystals can create a similar texture.

Thanks - totally spaced seeing the county in the title! :duh2:   :coffee:

I would say that is Triassic aged.

The Devonian blue is close, but I think only in the upper left corner of the state.

I really can't say that I would rule out trace fossil, but I think it does tend to put it in doubt. Sometimes additional evidence can be found in the area that might add information.
