What the heck?  Is this anything other than a weird formation/layering of various substances?  It’s large, probably 8-10 inches from broad end to narrow tip and 3-4 inches thick.

I've seen some fascinating preservation of whale skulls from California coast wondering if this is something similar?

Looks to me like a baleen whale (mysticete) bone - probably in the Monterey Formation (Altamira shale member if I remember correctly).

Thanks for your input!  I’ll be sharing some of my finds with a local geologist soon, so I’ll include this one in the mix.  If he gives me more detail, I’ll be sure to post here.
