Myliobatis Latidens(?); Eagle Ray- tooth plate? **bonus points** anyone able to ID the rock/mineral as well??

Initial thoughts after doing quite a bit of research- Eagle Ray tooth plate. Not 100% sure on this.

As far as the specific rock/mineral containing the fossil….perhaps rose quartz? Totally a shot in the dark here.

Would appreciate any feedback!

Looks like a silicified crinoid stem.

Where was this found?

Looks like a crinoid stem to me.

Not rose quartz but a silicious limestone, I should think.

Crinoid stem! & Silicious limestone, right on!

You two are very skilled- I really admire the intelligence!

Believe it or not I found it yesterday lying under a random pile of chert in STL, Missouri.

I’m curious by nature and have always been drawn to fossils and minerals.

thank you both :)

It may actually be chert it's preserved in.

Fossils are preserved in chert sometimes.

Agree with the above.

However, I have seen several of your requests for identification without any measure. In the future do not forget to give the size, in cm or inches only, it helps a good identification.

If you have nothing to measure, you can print the paper centimeter that I put available in my signature and make your photos with, let appear a box with the size or specify that the boxes are 1 cm side.

There's an awful lot of Paleozoic rocks in MO so that would make make this 100s of millions of years old.

For reference, ray plates consist of bone material. It is highly unlikely if even possible at all that a ray plate would be completely replaced with minerals like that.

Coco- thank you for the helpful suggestion and advising to take pics w/ measurements, I agree that this will help further identify this thing. I will absolutely do this once i get back.

I appreciate it!
