What do Member ranks do ?

Brevicollis

Recommended Posts

There are 4 member Ranks.

Newbie -  0-10 posts.

New Member - 10-20 posts.

Members -  20-50 posts.

Regular Members.  -  50 posts + up.

The ranks are there to let us know how long people have been members, and their participation level.
Some of the ranks allow additional features to be enabled.

For example, Newbies, and New Members cannot post/vote in FOTM contests.

We opted to de-emphasize rankings and ratings, including anything approximating a "like" button count as our vision of this space is considerably different than what is on offer on major social media platforms which seem mostly to elicit competition and social herding behaviour. ;)

It is still possible in the member search to sort by "reputation" (I found this informative button count). A relic from a couple years ago.

“If fossils are not "boggling" your mind then you are simply not doing it right” -Ken (digit)

"No fossil is garbage, it´s just not completely preserved” -Franz (FranzBernhard)

"With hammer in hand, the open horizon of time, and dear friends by my side, what can we not accomplish together?" -Kane (Kane)

"We are in a way conquering time, reuniting members of a long lost family" -Quincy (Opabinia Blues)

"I loved reading the trip reports, I loved the sharing, I loved the educational aspect, I loved the humor. It felt like home. It still does" -Mike (Pagurus)

“The best deal I ever got was getting accepted as a member on The Fossil Forum. Not only got an invaluable pool of knowledge, but gained a loving family as well.” -Doren (caldigger)

"it really is nice, to visit the oasis that is TFF" -Tim (fossildude19)

What exactly is the reputation measuring since the top members reputation numbers are not listed? Is it “I found this informative” notices received?

Nevertheless, it is unimportant as this is not a feature we rely on anymore.

It doesn't show the reputation score anymore, but the software used to give a point for every "informative" the person received.

It was all a bit misleading as the feature didn't begin until years after the forum had begun so all the members who posted thousands of great posts in that time didn't get the informative posts that they should have done and those that joined and posted a lot during this period "scored" hundreds or even thousands as there was no other button so "informative" included "like", "I agree", "thank you" and any other acknowledgment as well as "informative post".

It just became a numbers game, which is unnecessary as you can see how many posts a member has made anyway, or a popularity contest, which is silly.

If you want to get an indication of who might have a better reputation see who the staff members and members of the month are. Also look to the members that make helpful posts even if they don’t get a post notification button push. A high number of “I found this informative” notifications relative to their number of posts is also a positive sign.

The advice above is more directed to new members. Those of us that have been here a while know who to pay attention to for various good answers or help.

What about a ID related to potty training?

I frequently mess myself with inconsistent and incorrect information. Therefore, until I can present a greater understanding I must wear regular diapers.

Pull ups would be my next level. Still leaving some protections against information mixups.

Once members are deemed potty trained we can have any manner of superhero/heroine related under Roos as our Icon.

“This member is in a diaper, he’s possibly full of …. “

”This member is in some Hulk shorts. I’m taking  their advice!”

I think this has potential! Should give people motivation to improve too. Moving into a pull up is a big deal! “So much freedom and room for activities”.

😉

Less ranks also encourages quality of posts. Too many forums and social media groups have rankings where people post large amounts of garbage just to game their way to higher ranks. To achieve what? No clue, since nobody takes them seriously anyway since they've just posted randomness for months :headscratch:

We have a winner! What we strive to achieve is high-quality content, without the inanity so rampant on much of 'Social Media'.

Agreed...last year, I saw a new member join the forum, make 40 posts in one evening to lose new member status, and then enter FOTM.  Once the winner was announced (and wasn't this person), they haven't been back on the forum (in over a year).

Most of the posts I saw were them responding to other people's finds... saying "nice finds", "I've been there...nice place", and so on.  Not much that was helpful.  I know there isn't much else we can do to stop this, since it is already a delayed permission, but just thought I'd throw it out there.
