Went hunting yesterday.  There were not many choices with the water deep and currents fast. I was pleased to know that @Balance was out there dealing with the same conditions. It was cool but not cold with a 5 mm wetsuit on. I went back to a spot I had been digging over months because I believed it would be chest deep.  I had intermittent downpours with the last ending around noon. I covered the cockpit of my Kayak with a tarp made expressly for that purpose. Everything else into hatches.  The lowest water was chest deep so I could only dig down 6 inches or so.

It was enough.  In the 2nd sieve , I got a Tridactyl horse periotic,  likely Nannippus. 32 x 19 mm, One for your local disk, Jp

Even though fewer keepers based on the water depth,  some very nice unique finds: A Glyptodon edge osteoderm, Alligator tooth, a few nice Tiger and Bull shark teeth.

Here are some for comments and ID

A shark vert,  largest I have ever found.

I found one that looks the same , only smaller 4 months ago.  Curious that I have found 3 at this location and no different looking shark verts.  Although very difficult to identify individual shark verts this one seems most similar to Hammerhead,  I find a few but not many, Hammerhead teeth.

A couple of broken fossils that I am not sure of

1.  Stingray dermalIMG_4944ce.thumb.jpg.90ef3ee19dfcb0cf6a27dbdce8af496d.jpg

2. Alligator osteoderm

A tooth fragment:

My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs.

I slipped once and was chest deep. 😂 You like that rush from the first cold dip huh? 😉

It’s periodic January! Instead of a flaming eyeball you need a flaming ear bone decal on the nose of your yak.

deep water but what a beautiful day, right?

never like delivering bad news but you got twigged. It happens, Jack. I twigged myself several times yesterday. At least Mille wasn’t looking on to judge. 🫣😊😁

That "rush" from the 1st dip into the cold water definitely grabs one's attention.  In this case, as an eternal optimist hopes the depth is only 4 feet, slid my legs over the side of my kayak and dropped in... it was close to 5 feet  !! YIKES

As you say,  there have been a LOT of periotics,,,  Love it..

A gorgeous day... Sun came out at noon,  and I had it with me for the paddle back .  I also saw a couple of gators,  the largest just sort of slid into the water,  with his eyes on me the whole time, and head last to slip under..  Did not seem to respect me at all.. I know he was shorter than my 13'6 kayak but maybe not THAT much shorter .  I guess he was 10 feet from me going under...   YIKES !!! You know what they say... under 75 degrees , they are not that much interested in food.

Finally,

I have been finding these things under water that look like roots or twigs and are hard like rock and and snap cleanly when broken..  What do you think they are.. I always give these items the bite test.  Lots better than licking a fossil !:default_faint:TreeRootsfossilized.jpg.cefb09fdad8ae63f8d0fcd6117cdd8b1.jpg

Yes on plant material..  I have tended to think of them as some sort of roots..  As far as I can recall , they only occur in this location.  Here are photos from my last 3 times out.  When I pick up roots from other site, they are either newly deposited or soft and mushy.

These are the consistencies of a less dense rock.  Note the copper cable like endings in the 1st and 3rd photo.  Some days , I might find (and toss) 15-30 of these .

What about a vine instead of root?  No validation for that thought except vines obviously have something inside them that gives them greater tensile strength than roots.

Maybe your “cable ends” are exactly that. Just naturally made…

I think that makes sense,  Jp  and if you walk around the woods and streams ,  you realize that there are vines all over the place.  I think about double the thickness of these,  but they all start thin.

I agree.

Has more of a vine vibe than root.

Especially photo no 2
