Gainesville Florida Fossil Identification

Frightmares

Recommended Posts

Started going through some of my older finds and thought I’d try to identify some of them. These are all found in Gainesville, Florida creeks.

First one is just a chunk of bone, not sure if it’s even identifiable. My guess is part of a scapula because it’s somewhat flat and curved.  Second is a small bone, maybe a carpal of some sort? And third, I’m thinking is a partial alligator tooth. I can see a small bit of enamel left on it, but the enamel seems to have some ridges on it which is confusing.

  • Frightmares changed the title to Gainesville Florida Fossil Identification

First one is a chunk of bone that will be tough to ID beyond that.  Yes, it is flattish so maybe scapular, but could also be part of a hip and probably several other things.

Second one looks sort of like a worn, beat up alligator tail vertebra to me, especially in that first picture of it.

The enamel on at part of tooth looks a lot like the enamel on this sperm whale tooth i found in mixed Neogene deposits in Antwerp, Belgium. Also the conical shape and inside seem to match whale.
