Really a fun day... finding many favorites... AND

An unknown Caudal Vertebra to identify.  This should be identifiable.. How many of the Peace River fauna have tail vertebrae this wide.  I believe it not to be Marine Mammal, ..  I am hopeful another TFF member Identifies this before I track it down in a more difficult way...

Started to wonder,  can this be the Axis vertebra of a dolphin ? I am drawn to those articulation platforms. These below from Calvert Cliffs. @shark57  @Al Denteatlas-axis-fossil-vertebra.thumb.jpg.763fe1eab387dbd1b01ead4808db8d4d.jpg

I don't think it's a dolphin axis. As shown in the upper right of your Calvert Cliffs pic, a cetacean axis has a significant protruding knob for insertion into the atlas. I don't see that in your specimen. This does look more like a cervical than a caudal to me, just not an axis. Would be easier to tell if some of the processes were preserved.

Thanks for the response.

I noted the minimal protuberance and wanted a member more familiar with cetacean verts to evaluate.  I also moved from caudal to cervical,  and I was considering the Peace River fauna that might have a Vertebra centrum in the range of 60 mm wide. There are likely others  to investigate.

I will also attempt to locate closeup photos of Dolphin cervical vertebra, not the Axis.

Found some pictures of Dolphin Cervical Verts, The Axis below has robust superior articular surfaces,Gray087.jpg.9e225c5736d3f636dd58c362222fc44d.jpg

but the remainder of the cervical vertebra do not.

For comparison:

Harry,

The Centrum on my find  is L 37 x W 60 x H 29.  It seems in hand small for whale, However I accept that your L 9 x W 34 x H 26.8 mm is a whale cervical.

My problem with this one is more shape than size...  it has a short broken "dens" but large "Superior Articular surfaces"...  I would love to fit it to dolphin or whale because that was my initial thought,  but the combination does not seem to match the marine mammal cervical vertebra..

Meanwhile , when I have time, I search felids and canids, alligator... and even sloths

Sloth2.jpg.2535b86f372d120ae37bda4efa201b12.jpg

Look at that Axis Vert... LARGE articular processes and a much smaller "Dens"...

Could it be Armadillo or another Xenarthran... It is like an itch I can not scratch....   Jack

Always good to keep on working Identifications.  Saturday night sitting across a FPS board member, I pulled out the vert and he unconditionally Identified as Dugong Axis Vert.  Did a search this morning and found this on a UK dealer website:

Almost the exact size..  Likely a juvenile,  I am unsure how large an Adult Axis Vert can be...

I thought that the Articular facets would would be a determining feature.

My Find labeled Metaxytherium floridanum
