Jackmandu
Hello all! I was out and about this weekend and came across this unique piece. At first I thought it was limestone, but it is to dense and has a porous feel to it. I found this in SE South Dakota down and old tractor road. I am wondering if it is fossilized coral or ??? What do you think? Thanks for your time in advance!
Brevicollis
Can you try to take more pictures of it ?From all what i can see, i think its a sandstone which had eroded. Are good signatures really that important ?
ClearLake
I don't see an obvious coral looking fossil, but its not impossible. More pictures, as suggested, and try to put a little acid (vinegar) on it to see if it fizzes. That could help us determine the rock type. Any fresh break surfaces on it? I'm in the eroded rock camp unless we can see something more definitive.
Jackmandu
I did the vinegar test...no fizz. I am leaning towards what you both said...probably eroded sand stone. Thanks much for the input and insight!
