I’m sure I will happen upon the right website at some point to identify it, but haven’t yet… certain it’s easily identified by the experienced. Can anyone help? I assume it’s a sponge? Maybe coral? Type? Thank you. Illinois.

I think it's a Receptaculitid sponge. They have often been confused with coral though.

I think it's coral though the structure is blurry. It looks heliolitid as there seems to be coenenchyme between the corallite holes. A polished surface would help. :)
