Not seeing a fossil here, but size and location are essential.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

What is it that looks like a fossil to you? the reddish layer, the hole close to the top of the pic?

Best regards,,

Where was this found?

What size is this?

Any chance of dry pictures? Farther away, and close ups?

Thanks for the approximate location info, but it still appears to be a rock and not a fossil.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. Not seeing anything that screams fossil to me.
Just holes in limestone or sandstone block, which could be attributed to differential weathering or erosion if found in a stream/river.

Again still learning here so what are some "hacks" to tell if the item is just a rock vs a fossil?

Studying fossils, and possibly the stratigraphy of where specimens are being found, will be a good help. Once you know what can be reasonably found in an area, this can be compared against what it is you are finding. Not so much a "hack," but a concerted investment of time in research and field experience.

I normally deal with a different kind of rock... gemstones or healing crystals. So a "rock rock" is not my cup of tea normally.  There is something different to this one thou.

The area this was found on is my family estate. That certain part has 300 acres.  The estate does have raw crude oil still on it as well as deep iron ore vein.

As far as any finds in my area I'm not sure. This "whole dino adventure" lol is new to me.  Figured I could learn some stuff if nothing else.

Nope I take it back we did donate a vertebrate from the Cretaceous era to a research museum here. We got to know the lead palentogist there. Really nice guy. Anyways he was super interested in that item so my husband gave it to him to as a gift.  It was from a large bird but didn't ever email him to see which bird it was.
