Anyone know what this may be?

I found this today on a beach. It's magnetic but seems to have minerals in it. Possibly a meteorite or iron rock? No idea.20240319_212808.thumb.jpg.374d4f6e549528ed7ae777e4b76a6f95.jpg20240319_212817.thumb.jpg.a30a149ef15dcea4c706d6a210152ba1.jpg20240319_212826.thumb.jpg.0892bf8108508718b80b0b9cdf45e151.jpg20240319_212746.thumb.jpg.86a430c51d957f737a52ff157a00f1cf.jpg

Interesting find. As it is magnetic and the surface is flat on two sides I would assume it is manmade. Does not look like a meteorite or something like this.

But I really do not have an idea what it has originally been..., sorry

Judging by the straight edge and the right angle, I'd guess that this is a chunk of manmade something or other.

"Iron types" practically only occur as compound ores such as siderite, hamatite, magnetite, limonite or goethite and this doesn't look like any of those to me. Elemental iron is rarely found pure in nature and in my opinion this is certainly not basalt or a meteorite. I'll abide by my opinion that this is a somewhat weathered and rusted piece of manmade iron.

i am not disagreeing but if it was manmade iron, im a scrap recycler and thats not any type of iron that ive ever seen even with cutting steel and breaking cast. i truly now believe its not manmade as of when i broke this new piece off

Ok. So you obviously have some experience in your field, just as I do in mine. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Maybe you could take it to your local natural history museum and ask the experts there to assess it for you.

Agreed. Human debris washed up on the beach (at least it is not plastic). ;)

Cheers.

I can't explain any more than I already have. I've already stated my opinion so please leave it at that. I wish you good luck in determining what this is, but I'm not going to make any more comments here.

This should be quite heavy then! @Darkangal12, is it much heavier then a normal rock of similar size?

Piece of a broken anchor, maybe?

A lifetime ago I worked in metal recycling (junkyard). Cast iron looks like the broken surface when it breaks

But then if it's cast, what is it from.

Very heavy for anything similar.and where it came from we don't have ships that size. Just boats.

My impression is that we've pretty well exhausted the discussion. The overwhelming majority of responses point to something manmade, probably out of cast iron, but what it originates from will probably remain a matter of conjecture.
